Learned helplessness is a term used to describe a psychological state of a person or group of people as a result of past experiences of defeat and failure they have had which now leads to them being in a state where when exposed to a similar situation, they think they cannot do anything to change it. They believe they are powerless to change their environment. They have learned as it were helplessness.
Learned helplessness is behavior typical of an animal and occurs where the subject endures repeatedly painful or otherwise aversive stimuli which it is unable to escape or avoid. After such experience, the organism often fails to learn or accept “escape” or “avoidance” in new situations where such behavior would likely be effective. In other words, the organism learned that it is helpless in situations where there is a presence of aversive stimuli, has accepted that it has lost control, and thus gives up trying. Such an organism is said to have acquired learned helplessness.

The power to change the course of this nation lies not only in trying to get good leaders into office but in an enlightened and engaged citizenry. We could say in other words citizens who are educated actively participating in the political affairs of their nation, the system through which good leaders are elected and held accountable. If the enlightened ones get into a place where they believe they cannot effect a change because of the experiences of the past then those who want to control the affairs of the nation for purely selfish reasons have won. That is the defeat of an entire generation who though qualified and able but feel helpless to change anything.

At this Platform, we are speaking directly to that generation. We are saying there is a way to get involved and engaged. That if historically nothing changed when we tried, it doesn’t mean our future must be surrendered to our past experiences. Being better informed and working with the right information we can engage in a more strategic way and change the course of this nation.
